High King's Palace

New Life as a Max Level Archmage

High King's Palace is the royal center of Meridian and one of the city's defining landmarks. Set among the city's sharply divided districts, it embodies political authority through its elevated prominence, white marble, blue roofs, formal courtyard, and expansive garden, while its distance from the smoke, traffic, and commerce below gives it an air of guarded separation.

Position Within Meridian

High King's Palace stands in the northeast, near Meridian's dense urban center. The River Chalis divides the city into two halves, with banks, docks, warehouses, and busy shipping along its shores; farther downriver and downwind lies the industrial district, where brick buildings vent smoke and steam and a Convoy rail carries goods in enormous quantities. Against that practical, increasingly mechanized cityscape, the palace forms a conspicuous center of aristocratic and royal power.

The palace is joined to an opulent courtyard and a sprawling garden, making it more than a defensive or administrative structure in the visible geography of Meridian. Its white marble and blue roofs mark it as deliberately monumental, while its northeastern placement near the urban core places royal authority close to the city's principal circulation and institutions rather than at its margins.

Appearance and Grounds

From above, the palace presents as a carefully ordered landmark within the crowded city. Its architecture contrasts with the huge brick buildings of the industrial district and with the docks and warehouses lining the River Chalis. The combination of pale stone, blue roofing, formal open space, and extensive gardens gives the palace a polished, ceremonial character that distinguishes it from Meridian's smoke-filled commercial infrastructure.

The surrounding estate appears to have been immaculately maintained. When Vivisari Vexaria searches for the palace from the sky, she finds it quickly and confirms that it remains exactly where she had left it. Nothing visible seems out of place, and the grounds retain their former order. She dismisses Farsight rather than examining the property too closely, choosing to experience her old home in person instead of reducing it to a magical overview.

Royal Seclusion

The palace is also associated with the High King's withdrawal from public life. Rafael remarks that the High King has not left the palace in years and refers to him as a senile old man. The remark is made while Rafael is preparing to leave his office early and instructs Allegra to allow no interruptions, adding that even the High King should not disturb him—although he concedes that such a visit would at least be interesting.

This exchange gives the palace a second identity beyond architectural grandeur. It is both the visible seat of the kingdom's highest authority and the enclosure of a ruler whose absence has become so prolonged that a possible appearance would itself be noteworthy. The palace therefore suggests power that remains institutionally immense while becoming personally remote, dormant, or difficult to reach.

Narrative Significance

The palace's placement makes Meridian legible as a hierarchy of spaces. Industry and transport occupy the downriver, downwind quarter; the Noble's District lies to the south and west; and the royal residence dominates the northeast near the city's dense center. The geography links economic production, aristocratic privilege, and sovereign authority without treating them as interchangeable: each occupies its own district, yet all are connected by the river, roads, shipping, and Convoy rail.

For Vivisari Vexaria, the palace is also a point of return. Her decision to stop using Farsight and approach her old home directly turns an urban landmark into a site of memory and personal history. For Rafael, meanwhile, it represents a political presence so distant and diminished that even the possibility of contact interrupts his otherwise flat and dissatisfied routine. High King's Palace consequently functions as both a material center of Meridian and a symbol of authority preserved behind immaculate grounds, ceremonial architecture, and deep seclusion.
